Advantages of EDFA Wdm
High gain: Gain value is one of the most important parameters of optical amplifier. The max gain of a qualified optical amplifier should reach 33db, while that of an edfa can reach 30~40db. In addition, it provides good gain flatness over a wide wavelength band.
Low noise: Edfa can spontaneously radiate noise, so it has low noise usually at 4~7db. The crosstalk between each channel is minimal and multiple amplifiers can be cascaded. Its low noise feature makes it very suitable for long-haul application.
Low loss: The working wavelength of edfa is within the optimal waveband region (1500~1600nm) with minimum loss in fiber optic communication. The loss of coupling with optical fiber link is also minimum.
Wide wavelength band: Edfa frequency bandwidth is 20~40nm at 1550nm wavelength, and can realize multichannel transmission, thus increases transmission capacity.
Easy deployment: Its simple structure makes it easier to couple with transmission fiber, making it more affordable compared with other signal amplification methods.

Features of EDFA Wdm
EDFA is a low noise 1550nm optical amplifier designed to amplify 1550nm optical signals to increase the optical transmission distance over fiber, and can be used in conjunction with the DIGICAST 1550nm optical transmitters.
Equipped with 32 output ports, and with low noise and high linearity, this High Power EDFA can be used in the transmission of video, voice and data signals making it the ideal optical amplification solutions for long links, redundant rings, blast and split, and other applications.
Front panel LCD Status Display shows all status parameters and provides ability to set parameters on the EDFA.
High-capacity and high-speed optical communication system: The application of edfa is very constructive to deal with the problems of low sensitivity of receivers and short transmission distances owing to a lack of oeo repeater.
Long-haul optical communication system: By utilizing edfa, we can dramatically lower construction cost by increasing the repeater spacing to reduce the quantity of regenerative repeaters. The long-haul optical communication system mainly includes the land trunk optical transmission system and the submarine optical fiber cable transmission system.
Optical fiber subscriber access network system: If the transmission distances are too long, edfa will function as the line amplifier to compensate for the transmission losses of lines, thus greatly increasing the number of subscribers.
Wavelength-division multiplexing (wdm) system: Especially dense wavelength-division multiplexing (dwdm) system. Utilization of edfa in wdm system is able to solve the problems of insertion loss and reduce the influences of chromatic dispersion.
Community antenna television (catv) system: In catv system, edfa functions as the booster amplifier to greatly improve the input power of an optical transmitter. Utilizing edfa to compensate for the insertion loss of optical power splitters can significantly enlarge the scale of the distribution network and increase the number of subscribers.

Components of EDFA Wdm
Erbium-doped fiber (edf): This is the core component where the optical amplification takes place. Erbium ions are embedded within the fiber, and when excited by the pump laser, they amplify the optical signal at the desired wavelength.
Pump laser: The pump laser provides the energy to excite the erbium ions in the edf. Common pump wavelengths are 980 nm and 1480 nm.
Wdm combiner: The wdm combiner combines the pump laser signal with the incoming optical signal, allowing them to travel together through the edf.
Optical isolator: Isolators prevent reflected light from interfering with the edfa's performance. They ensure that light only travels in one direction through the amplifier.
Optical filter: Filters are used to eliminate amplified spontaneous emission (ase) noise, improving the signal quality.
Optical circulator: An optical circulator can be used to direct light along different paths in the edfa, potentially for monitoring or other functions.
